We have been busy learning the days of the week, we have enjoyed learning a song to help us remember the order of them. We have been learning and talking about concepts such as hot/ cold/ wet/dry and in/on. Forest school session today was so much fun, we looked at bird nests and what birds eat, including making bird feeders. We learnt about fire safety and had a go at making sparks using flints. We used our camp fire to cook Quesadillas for snack.
Sugar Tax Removed!
In 1874, William Gladstone, the Prime Minister removed tax on sugar. This made sugar more affordable and led to more people having tooth decay. We investigated the effect of sugary liquids and other liquids on our teeth.
We soaked 5 eggs in vinegar, cola, water, coffee and the final egg was half soaked in coffee and toothpaste.
After 2 days, the eggs in coffee and cola stained the egg shell and stuck to the surface. This bacteria then breaks down the sugar to make acid which can damage teeth.
We found our toothpaste covered egg stained less than the non toothpaste covered egg.
The vinegar completely dissolved the eggshell, leaving just the membrane behind.
Victorian School Life in Knighton!
This week the children experienced life in a Victorian classroom when they were greeted for lessons by a very strict Miss Green! They found out about the 3R’s, the drill, the ‘dunce’s cap’ and the cane!
They also looked at old photographs of Knighton School in Victorian times and recorded all of the facts that they could recall on a mind map. They will use their mind map next week to write a report on Victorian schools.
Week 10th Jan
Victorian Shops
We have enjoyed finding out about the shops that were in Knighton in Victorian times. We used some of the pictures from Mary Cadwallader’s book showing what Victorian Knighton was like. We created a graphs on HWB showing our favourite Victorian shops and posters to advertise them. Here are some of our posters.
The Hindu Story of Creation
We have been reading and discussing the Hindu story of Creation. We composed music to depict the story and we created our own dance to represent the key parts of the story.
We also created a collage of Vishnu and Brahma.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5JDocMmxLOohttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5JDocMmxLOo
Do you know anything already? What is it called? What are they like? Where in the world are they? What grows there? Watch the video again and imagine you are there. Use your senses to help: see, hear, smell, feel and taste.
- Complete a senses journey based on the rainforest. The sheet can be found below. Please do not print it out, just copy it onto paper or complete it on the computer.
- Look at the words and definitions below and match them. Again no need to print these out, discuss with an adult or write them out.

Dosbarth Gwennol Home Learning - Friday 7th January 2022
Happy New Year! Welcome back to the start of a new term and new year, as Friday 7th January is a confirmed home schooling day, here are a few activities that I would like your child to complete and email pictures of their work to me.
Activity 1 – Maths – Time – Can you recite all of the months of the year? Check with an adult to see that you have included them all.
Write a list of each of the months of the year and key events that occur in those months to help you to remember them. For example…
January – 10th Jane’s birthday
February – 1st Chinese New Year
14th St Valentines Day
18th Comic Relief
and so on…..
Activity 2 Literacy – Writing – To write a report detailing what you had for Christmas. You can write about your favourite present in detail or a paragraph describing each present. Suggested things to include in your report – a description of your present (s), what does it look, feel, smell, sound or taste like, who gave it to you and why it is so special. You may also wish to draw a picture of your present.
Activity 3 – New Year Resolutions – At the start of the new year people like to make ‘resolutions’ or goals that they would like to set for themselves. Think of five goals that you would like to achieve in 2022. Write them in a list and explain how you are going to try and achieve them. For example…
Goal 1 – Become a better reader – I am going to go on Nessy for 10 minutes each day.
